2024 PROJECTS
Each year members of the club attend a Planning Meeting in March where projects for the year are discussed and voted on to support. In 2024 we plan to raise funds to support the following worthy causes. Check out the list of local, national and international projects our club is supporting this year:
District 23, Area 2 and Zonta Club of Mt Barker initiatives:
- Zonta Birthing Kits - providing a clean birthing environment and decreasing the risk of death from infection and bleeding.
- Zonta Breast Care Cushions - providing comfort to women (and men) in the post-operative phase of breast surgery. Cushions are supplied to hospitals at Mt Barker, Fleurieu area, Barossa area, Pt Augusta, Pt Pirie and Whyalla. Distribution in hospitals is by Breast Care Nurses. We also provide Calvary Hospital with BC Cushions.
- Young Women in Public Affairs Award - awards are presented each year to a Year 12 student at Mt Barker High School and Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School. The students are selected on their leadership and involvement in School and wider Community groups and activities.
- 16 Days of Activism - held each year from 25th November until the 10th December - activities take place in Mt Barker and surrounding towns to shine a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. They are a moment to create public awareness about what needs to change to prevent it from happening in the first place at local, national, regional, and international levels.
- Bags of Love - personal and feminine hygiene products are supplied in a handmade tote bag and donated to women in need.
- Closing the Gap - providing basic obstetric and gynecological ultrasound training to midwives and doctors in remote and aboriginal communities so patients can access ultrasound services.
- Expect Respect Program - each year approximately 80-100 - Year 6 students at Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School have the opportunity to be involved in workshops on ways to show respect for everyone they meet in their everyday lives with a focus on Communication and Relationships. They follow the workshops with art work that promotes anti Domestic Violence concepts. A calendar is launched with students work highlighting their messages. Winner of the SCASA Premier Harry Tillyer Award in November 2023.
- Resilience Awards - are presented to students from St Mary's College, Eastern Fleurieu R-12 School and Adelaide Hills Vocational College who have shown great resilience and stamina in continuing their studies at school during the year.
- Supporting Women and Girls in the Community - occurs through support of programs at the Mt Barker Community Centre such as the Dare to Dream Workshops. Also collaborate with the MBCC on International Women's Day and 16 Days of Activism - Say No to Violence Against Women. Mentoring is also provided when required to girls at the Adelaide Hills Vocational College.
- Support of programs for girls or women - "What's the Buzz" is a program for young girls to help them learn life skills especially ways to communicate and relate to others.
