$110 to purchase a water cart
A woman's role in Afar culture is to look after the household duties which includes collecting water & firewood, looking after the children, milking the animals, herding the goats and feeding the family. The nearest water source lies approx 1km from the community. A water cart will save women and young girls carrying up to 20-30 litres of water on their backs 6 times a day. Maternal mortailty and miscarriage rates are very high and many women suffer from sciatica  neuritis and lordosis of the lumber spine. When using a water cart, a women is reduced to only two trips day to collect water from the river.
