COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF

 WOMEN

April, 2015

Picture
Since 1969, Zonta International has had General Consultative Status at the United Nations. This is the highest possible status for a non-governmental organisation (NGO) at the UN, and makes Zonta one of only 146 NGOs to have achieved this status out of the more than 4,000 NGOs involved with the UN.

As an NGO with General Consultative Status, Zonta International is invited to participate in the annual
Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York. CSW is a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the UN, and the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

2015 was the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the resulting Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, as well as the year that existing UN Millennium Development Goals expire.

To this end, Zonta made its voice heard loud and clear at the 59th annual CSW meeting held on 11 March 2015.

During the CSW59, more than 70 Zontians participated to advocate for a strong and sustainable post 2015 development agenda that emphasises gender equality and women’s empowerment, and to promote proposed Sustainable Goal 5 Achieve Gender Equality and Empower all Women and Girls.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

March, 2015

Picture
Has been observed since the early 1900's and is now an official holiday in 27 countries. The new millennium has witnessed significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. There have been gains made however the unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.
Zonta is involved at an international level advocating on behalf of women across all of these major issues. More information can be found at www.zonta.org
Zonta Mt Barker always welcomes new members who want to take up the cause for women.

OFFICIAL INCORPORATION OF

 CLUB

May, 2014

Picture
Charter Dinner to celebrate the official incorporation of the Zonta Club of Mt Barker. It all happened on the evening of Friday 23rd May at Auchendarroch House in Mt Barker – a gathering of over 80 Zonta members and guests, heralding the beginning of a brand new service club in the region.

Zonta is an international service organisation of women working together to advance the status of women through service and advocacy and was established in 1919.  There are 1,200 clubs in more than 63 countries with 30,000 members worldwide.

The Zonta Club of Mt Barker was chartered with 24 local women as founding members, keen to raise money and support local and international causes.

From all walks of life, some working and some retired, this energetic group of women is keen to make a difference to the lives of other women.

President Di McCallum says “We are so excited about the charter of this new club and we look forward to welcoming many more women into the club to work on worthwhile projects like our Birthing Kits for women in Third World countries and the “Say No” Campaign to end violence towards women here in the Adelaide Hills.”

The Club meets at 6.30pm on the 3rd Tuesday of every month for a dinner meeting at Auchendarroch House.
